Lymphedema is a swelling of a body part, often an arm or leg.
It results from accumulation of fluids triggered by removal or radiation
of lymph nodes or vessels, such as happens during cancer surgery
or treatment. Lymphedema can occur immediately after a medical procedure,
or years later.
Lymphedema interferes with wound healing and provides an environment
for bacteria, increasing the potential for infection. As swelling
and inflammation persist, the tissue thickens and becomes fibrotic,
causing discomfort and decreased mobility. This can lead to a worsening
of condition, followed by depression and overall decline in health.
